The Raelyn Nelson Band is both an homage to its namesake’s outlaw grandfather and a fine-tuned rock and roll band. Willie Nelson’s talented kin Raelyn’s talents make her the unabashedly Southern element of an aptly labeled country-rock project. She’s joined by guitarist Jonathan Bright—from fellow Nashville act Defense Wins Championships—and the rocking rhythm section of bassist Preach Rutherford and drummer Angela Lese Gregory. Some have likened the four-piece to Loretta Lynn fronting Cheap Trick. That’s a fair assessment, based on “Mama Cry,” “Mason Jar” and other originals—not to mention that infectiously fun cover of John Michael Montgomery’s “Sold (The Grundy County Auction Incident).”
