After the critical acclaim garnered by 2018’s Steak Night at the Prairie Rose, Austin, TX, country band Mike and the Moonpies could’ve maintained momentum by recording more red-dirt anthems close to home. Instead, the group flipped the script by cutting Cheap Silver and Solid Country Gold in London at Abbey Road Studios. Beyond the change of scenery, the historic studio offered the band a chance to collaborate with special guest the London Symphony Orchestra. This unlikely mix of roots tradition and highbrow music allowed for a well-crafted celebration of the string-accompanied Nashville sound of the 1960s. It’ll be interesting to hear how this highfalutin experiment translates to the live stage.
