With songs featuring tales of domestic life and life on the road, Durham, NC resident M.C. Taylor’s most recent release under the Hiss Golden Messenger moniker, Heart Like a Levee, strikes many of the same chords as his folk and alt-country contemporaries. Unlike his more freewheeling peers, though, Taylor’s music is particularly focused on the tension between the two experiences, and how the necessity to tour as both passion and profession fuels an unparalleled guilt towards the family he supports. For this reason, Heart Like a Levee is ostensibly more bittersweet than Hiss Golden Messenger’s 2014 Merge debut, though it’s no less gratifying.
