Some Army

Sometimes the best shows come from unknown artists relegated to “opening act,” or a small venue such as Flicker. The brand of artists that plays these types of shows—the ones that drive six hours to play to a crowd of five—get way more gold stars in my book than a major headliner. Some Army gets 10 gold stars and +10 cool points for their performance last night. Every member of the band exuded a genuine sense of loving what they do, which became apparent immediately out of the gate, as the drummer rocked out with a huge smile on his face.

Some Army plays music that makes you want to get up and dance. The feel of the band’s music is created by a delicate balance of building rhythms that explode into calm breaks of serene stillness. Watching the band is a show in itself. There were constant instrument changes between songs, and not only did the members play multiple instruments, but almost every member provided some form of vocal support. While playing the songs, the band became immersed in the music and built to intense jam sessions in the middle of the song.

Not much banter occurred between songs due to the small crowd, but the one statement that sparked my interest was the proclamation, “We’re going on a musical journey.†That’s the best way to describe Some Army’s music. It produces a feeling of wanderlust and nostalgia that allows the audience to form a strong connection. The band’s shimmering harmonies, combined with its ability to put everything it has into the music, made at least one fan last night.
