Memorial Service Scheduled Friday for UGA Professor Marianne Shockley

A memorial service for University of Georgia professor Marianne Shockley will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Apalachee United Methodist Church in Madison, according to her obituary.

Shockley, 42, was an award-winning professor in the UGA College of Agriculture. Her specialty was entomophagy, or eating insects. Flagpole wrote about her work in 2015 and again last year.

Former students remembered her as a passionate teacher and generous mentor.

She died under bizarre circumstances, according to the Milledgeville Union-Recorder and other news reports. Her boyfriend has been charged with her murder, and the owner of the Milledgeville home where she died killed himself shortly after being questioned by police.

Shockley’s family has started a GoFundMe campaign to cover funeral costs and expenses for her two teenage children.
