Starting this Saturday through Dec. 19, you can catch a free bus to the Athens Farmers Market, except on football gamedays.
The “Fresh Food Bus” will run on Saturday mornings every hour from 8:15 a.m.–12:15 p.m. and will stop at Building S, Memorial Hall/the Tate Center, the Multimodal Center and Russell Hall. A full schedule is available here.
Surveys identified transportation as a major barrier to obtaining fresh food and participating in Wholesome Wave Georgia’s doubling of SNAP benefits at the farmers market, according to WWG.
The program is a partnership among the farmers market, WWG, Athens Transit, UGA Campus Transit, the UGA Office of Sustainability, UGA Food Services, UGA Housing, the Student Government Association, Students for Environmental Action and Real Food UGA.
In addition, riding city buses is free each of the next four Sundays as Athens Transit launches its Sunday bus service. Check here for routes and schedules.
If that’s not enough, the progressive political group Athens for Everyone is working with local restaurants to offer discounts for diners who ride the bus this Sunday.
Big City Bread, Five & Ten, Heirloom Cafe and White Tiger Gourmet are offering 10 percent discounts to bus riders. The World Famous is offering $1 off the bill.
To receive the discount, ask the bus driver for a transfer pass, then show the pass to your server.
Athens for Everyone also is giving away prizes to Sunday bus riders who post photos on social media. Use the hashtags #SundayBus or #BustoBrunch.
