Red Bull’s Sound Select monthly music showcase comes to Athens this week with a killer lineup of rising hip hop stars.
The event is being headlined by D.R.A.M., a Virginia-based rapper who recently attained superstar status with this year’s biggest hip hop crossover hit, “Broccoli.”
With his positive attitude and unusual vocal style, D.R.A.M. started gaining attention in late 2014 with his #1Epic mixtape and its breakout single, “Cha Cha.”
The Super Mario-sampling “Cha Cha” was infamously (and allegedly) swagger-jacked by Drake to create the chart-topper “Hotline Bling,” causing hundreds of pages of arguments on hip hop forums across the internet.
Nearly two years later, D.R.A.M. has moved past all the drama to become one of the biggest rappers of 2016. “Broccoli,” which features Atlanta rapper Lil Yachty, was hailed by many as the song of the summer, and proved without a shadow of a doubt that D.R.A.M. has the charm and creative mindset to avoid being known as a one-hit wonder.
D.R.A.M. will be supported by affable Bay Area rapper Antwon and Atlanta hip hop/R&B/electronic duo Girls in the Yard (comprised of Bosco & Speakerfoxx).
