T2 Trainspotting (an awkward, not quite memorable title) is more class reunion than satisfying sequel. Twenty years later, Mark “Rent Boy” Renton (Ewan McGregor) returns to Scotland to face the music with his old friends—Simon “Sick Boy” Williamson (Jonny Lee Miller), Daniel “Spud” Murphy (Ewen Bremner) and the incarcerated Francis “Franco” Begbie (Robert Carlyle). Despite Mark’s earlier theft of £16,000, his life has not ended up much better than that of Sick Boy or Spud. Still, his old best pal plots revenge with his sort of girlfriend, a pretty immigrant named Veronika (Anjela Nedyalkova), while Begbie threatens him after a concurrent escape. Apparently, we learn that after 20 years these buddies might not all be addicts, but they remain losers. Fortunately, constant collaborators Danny Boyle and John Hodge invite us back to a life we would rather not live but certainly enjoy visiting. T2 Trainspotting is every bit as entertaining as its predecessor while being consistently as unmemorable. Do not see this movie if you have not seen the original. You would be better off attending a 20 year class reunion in a small town in another state. Trainspotting acquaintances will be satisfied by this continuance.
