Día de los Muertos, or the Day of the Dead, is a holiday celebrated within Mexican culture. During this celebration, families gather to celebrate the life of lost loved ones and honor their memory through traditions. Coinciding with the holiday, the UGA Performing Arts Center is hosting a concert performed by America’s leading mariachi band, Mariachi Sol de México de José Hernández. What makes the band so distinct is its fusion of contemporary pop with the traditional mariachi sound. Hernández is a fifth generation mariachi player hailing from the La Sierra del Tigre region of Jalisco. Music exists in his soul, and he and his band wish to translate this to the communal celebration of Día de los Muertos. A free pre-performance talk will be held in Ramsey Concert Hall at 6:45 p.m.
