UGA Theatre opened its 2023–2024 season last weekend with a performance of Silent Sky, written by Lauren Gunderson and directed by Vivian Appler. The play follows brilliant astronomer Henrietta Leavitt in a true story of defying the societal expectations of the early 20th century to further humanity’s understanding of the cosmos. This performance is a tribute to her scientific feats within the field. The play is Appler’s directorial debut for the department of theater and film studies since joining its faculty in 2022. The play will be held in the Cellar Theatre of the Fine Arts Building on campus, and performances will be held Oct. 4–6 at 8 p.m. and Oct. 8 at 2 p.m. An ASL interpreter will be present during the Oct. 6 and Oct. 8 performances. Tickets are $18 for the general public and $6 for students with a valid UGA ID.
