Everyone is familiar with Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, likely due to the numerous retellings and adaptations like Baz Luhrmann’s Romeo + Juliet, Arthur Laurents’ West Side Story, Cold War parody Romanoff and Juliet, computer-animated Gnomeo and Juliet and High School Musical. But you’ve never seen a Romeo and Juliet quite like the one Town & Gown Players are bringing you. This Romeo and Juliet is a mix between Shakespeare’s Elizabethan classic, the documentary Paris is Burning and “RuPaul’s Drag Race.” Set in the ’90s, the Montagues and Capulets aren’t dueling family houses; they’re dueling drag houses. UGA theatre major Jase Wingate plays Romeo, and Caroline Bradley Davis, a new Athens resident, plays Juliet. The Town & Gown Players promise to give audiences a fierce and fabulous tragedy. Weekday and Saturday shows begin at 8 p.m. while Sunday shows begin at 2 p.m. Tickets are between $8 and $15.
