The cute little building at Hancock and Broad that most recently housed Preserve is about to get a new tenant. Monica Huff will open The Fish Shack with her son, Julius, in February, although they’re waiting on inspections to have an official date.

Huff isn’t new to the restaurant business. Most recently, she operated a similar business on Tallassee Road, in the space that Rashe’s Cuisine now occupies. Before that, she had another fish shack, down the street from her current location, on the land that Saucehouse now claims. Both were good, putting out tasty, basic fried fish meals.

Huff says she’s had her eye on this building for a while. She likes the location because of its visibility and the steady food and car traffic that passes it. A native Athenian, she also remembers going to the Arctic Girl that was the building’s first tenant.

Her plan this time around is to offer a simple menu: whiting, catfish or tilapia, to be combined with coleslaw, hush puppies and fries. She says she figures she can always expand her offerings.

The Fish Shack won’t serve alcohol, but it will take credit cards. The Huffs plan to be open Wednesday through Saturday from 11 a.m.–8 p.m.
