Opening in Athens: Gone Girl, The Good Lie and More

Here’s what’s new on the screen in Athens this week:

GONE GIRL (R; showtimes): This arrival should jumpstart an already lively box office. David Fincher’s adaptation of Gillian Flynn’s bestselling page-turner stars Ben Affleck as the accused hubby and Rosamund Pike as the titular character. Neil Patrick Harris and Tyler Perry make for intriguing supporting players.

ANNABELLE (R; showtimes): October must be here, because here comes the horror. The Conjuring spinoff features that movie’s popular spooky doll. The trailers do not look promising.

THE GOOD LIE (PG-13; showtimes): Reese Witherspoon’s inspirational flick about the Lost Boys of Sudan also opens. With direction from Monsieur Lazhar’s Philippe Falardeau, maybe this movie will surprise.

LEFT BEHIND (PG-13; showtimes): If you’re looking for a movie that looks laughably bad, look no further than the Nicolas Cage-starring remake of the Christian apoca-drama.

OTHER OPTIONS: The Skeleton Twins, a promising comedy starring Kristen Wiig and Bill Hader, opens at Cine, along with Michel Gondry’s latest mindbender, Mood Indigo. As the weather cools off, the cinema always heats up. This week is only the beginning.
