Local civil rights group the Athens Anti-Discrimination Movement has opened a resource center and meeting space in a strip-mall storefront on Atlanta Highway.
Located at the Athens West Shopping Center (3190 Atlanta Highway) next to Domino’s, the “justice center” will provide a meeting space for teens, host workshops and include a bookstore and computer lab, AADM cofounder Knowa Johnson said after a ribbon-cutting ceremony Jan. 16. In addition, AADM programs that assist people with getting bailed out of jail and filing discrimination complaints will be housed at the justice center.
Mayor Kelly Girtz, District Attorney Deborah Gonzalez and Sheriff John Q. Williams spoke at the ribbon-cutting, which was attended by about 50 people on a chilly Saturday afternoon. All three emphasized that justice is an important component of keeping the community safe.
The justice center’s hours are noon to 5 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays and 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Wednesdays and Fridays.
