Composer Phil Kline’s “boombox parade,” Unsilent Night, has become a worldwide tradition since he distributed boomboxes to participants and marched around New York City’s Greenwich Village to create a mobile sound sculpture in 1992. The sounds of winter filled the air in the form of chimes, shimmering bells and chanting. Since its debut that cold night in December, the event has spread to 150 cities across five continents. What is unique about this parade is the absence of instruments, making the event accessible and open to the entire community. Athens participants will gather at Little King’s Shuffle Club before parading through downtown, across the UGA quad and end at the 40 Watt Club. Participants are encouraged to bring a bluetooth speaker or play music aloud from their phones, and the composition’s tracks can be downloaded ahead of time at unsilentnight.com. Join the rest of the Athens community for this family-friendly secular event.
