Chris Stapleton, Sam Lewis

Nashville songwriter and guitarist Chris Stapleton has logged time onstage with prominent bluegrass outfit The SteelDrivers, as well as Southern rock group The Jompson Brothers, but he has thus far been most influential behind the scenes, penning No. 1 hits for canonical country artists like George Strait, as well as cheeseballs like Kenny Chesney. Now, Stapleton has stepped out on his own, with brilliant results. His excellent new full-length, Traveller, is the rare crossover country album to unite purists and hipsters; like Sturgill Simpson’s recent Metamodern Sounds in Country Music, Traveller is an unabashed ode to its forebears and a striking blueprint for the future.
