UPDATE: Another Pedestrian Run Over and Killed

The second pedestrian of the week was hit by a car and killed Sunday, apparently while walking along the Loop.

Just before 10 p.m., the unidentified woman, described as a black female in her 40s, (Update: police have identified her as Kathy Maxey, 55) stepped into traffic near the Oconee Street intersection and was hit by a car traveling southbound on the Loop, according to Athens-Clarke County police.

The driver, Edwin Gaona, 20, of Bogart, was charged with driving under the influence of drugs and homicide by vehicle. A 17-year-old passenger was treated for non-life-threatening injuries at Athens Regional Medical Center.

Lisa Anne Pope, 50 was killed in a hit-and-run crossing West Broad Street on Thursday.
