An Athens man died after being shot in the parking lot of a Commerce Road nightclub early Saturday morning, according to Athens-Clarke County police.
Police were dispatched to Country Rock Cafe Bootleggers Country & Western Bar at about 2:40 a.m. and found two seriously injured men with gunshot wounds in the parking lot. They were taken to the hospital, where one of them, Derrick Merritt, 22, died.
Police said the two men were not involved in a dispute between two other patrons that led to the shooting.
Police, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation and the coroner’s office are investigating the shooting as a homicide. They asked anyone with information about the shooting to call the tip line 1t 706-613-3342.
