Anyone in Athens who came home from the holiday to find his flat-screen TV untouched ought to be thankful.

Athens-Clarke police fielded reports of 40 burglaries and attempted burglaries over the holiday, from Wednesday to Sunday. “It was Thanksgiving week, and people were out of town in greater numbers,” said Maj. Mike Hunsinger, head of the police department’s east precinct.

Break-ins were reported on Sleepy Creek Drive, Arch Street, Timothy Road, Acadia Drive, South Milledge Avenue, Habersham Drive, Live Oak Place, Woodcrest Drive, Tallassee Road, Vine Street, Pauldoe Street, First Street, Old Princeton Road, Highland Park Drive, Oconee Street, Lavender Road, Tilson Road, Winter Hill Drive, West Broad Street, Fifth Street, East Cloverhurst Drive, Northside Drive, Melbourne Place, Boulder Trail, Carriage Court, Jolly Lane, Pittard Road, Sleepy Creek Drive, Sayemore Drive, Davis Street, Old Jefferson Road, Roberts Road and Georgia Drive.

Police also reported 11 car thefts and break-ins, including six Friday on Winding Brook Trail and Springwater Court they said were related.
