Friends Host Medical Benefit Sunday for Local Musician Ty Manning

Ty Manning is an established and beloved Athens songwriter and guitarist known for his work with several local bands, including the Bearfoot Hookers and, more recently, Ty Manning and the Slawdog Biscuits—a nominee in this year’s Flagpole Athens Music Awards Folk/Americana category. Manning, who is also a teacher at Morgan County High School, has a history of heart problems and will undergo a third open-heart surgery on May 6.

On top of the medical procedure, Manning’s home kitchen was recently severely damaged by a roof leak. To help allay his medical and home-repair expenses, friends have set up a GoFundMe campaign and organized a benefit show for Sunday, May 5 at The Foundry.

The show, dubbed “Cinco de Ty-o,” will feature performances by Fester Hagood, Betsy Franck, Todd White, Redstone Ramblers, Claire Campbell, Clarence “Big C” Cameron and many others, including the Hookers themselves. In addition, there will be local art and special T-shirts for sale.

“He is loved by all who meet him, and spreads joy wherever he goes,” reads the concert’s Facebook event page. “Let’s rally for the man who has given so much to so many!”

Tickets for the benefit show are $10 at the door or the Foundry website.
