Flagpole Premieres: lighthearted, “Ghost”

Ahead of tomorrow’s official release, lighthearted share the new single, “Ghost,” a brooding and earnest song of unrequited love—ghosting, if you will. Playing music together since they were young, twin sisters Gracie Huffman (piano, lead vocals) and Eliza Huffman (acoustic guitar, background vocals) anchor the band, which also includes Win Cawthorne on electric guitar and Toni Hunlo on drums.

“Ghost was inspired after I hosted a Halloween party fall 2019,” says Gracie Huffman. “My roommate had hung a sheet over a piece of wire that connected from our porch to a nearby tree for decoration. I had recently ended things with a guy, or ‘ghosted’ him so to speak, and he decided to show up to our party. The next day, I wanted to sit on my porch, smoke a cigarette and try to write a song. The first inhale resulted in me gasping for breath, and inspiration struck. This resulted in a song written about confusing, unrequited love from the boy’s perspective intertwined with imagery about the night, smoke and breath.”

Originally intended as a pared-down tune for only vocals and acoustic guitar, the arrangement quickly morphed into a much fuller sound once stepping into the studio. After recording piano and drums, Huffman approached friends to join in: Andrew Huang on bass, Tori Brunner on cello, Cannon Rogers on pedal steel and ben Shaver on saxophone. The soulful results mark the beginning of a new sound following lighthearted’s debut EP, Asking for a Friend, that was released in May 2020.

“Ghost” will become available on streaming platforms Oct. 29. Stay up to speed on Instagram and Facebook.
