Akins Ford Arena Receives Occupancy Permit

The Athens-Clarke County fire marshal has cleared the Classic Center’s new arena to open on Friday.

Akins Ford Arena received a temporary certificate of occupancy today after problems with the fire system last week pushed back the arena’s grand opening. It was originally scheduled to open on Dec. 6 with the home opener for the Rock Lobsters minor league hockey team. Tickets for that game will be honored on Dec. 13. Games Dec. 7 and 12 have yet to be rescheduled.

“We are thrilled to open the doors of Akins Ford Arena and invite the community into this spectacular venue,” Paul Cramer, president and CEO of The Classic Center Authority, said in a news release. “Some things are worth waiting for, and this is one of them.”

Saturday, Athens band of Montreal will open for local legends the B-52s. A free community celebration is scheduled for Sunday from 1-4 p.m.
