Athens Bagel Is Open, Slater’s Has Lunch and More Food News

Closed for more than three years due to needing repairs then stuck in a cycle of historic preservation hearings and contractor difficulties, Athens Bagel is back open on Jackson Street downtown. If you hadn’t noticed, this is not New York, and getting a decent bagel ain’t easy. Yes, they come in blueberry and honey-wheat, but the classics (sesame, salt, onion) have always been hard to beat locally. Hooray!

Slater’s Steakhouse, in Five Points, has added late-week lunch to its offerings. From 11 a.m.–2 p.m. Friday and Saturday, you can get martinis, a wedge salad, shrimp cocktail, steak frites, a chicken schnitzel sandwich, a cheesesteak and the like, treating yourself after a long week. A combo of a wedge or Caesar salad, a big bowl of fries and “teeny ‘tini” will run you $20 for TikTok’s “perfect meal.” You can make reservations or try your luck walking in.

5 & 10 is trying something new on Sunday evenings, when it’s back open for dinner after a hiatus. Chef Fausto Zamorano, who for my money really knows his way around a dish, is turning out contemporary Mexican dishes those nights. The bar opens at 4 p.m. with some snacks, and reservations are available starting at 5 p.m., with the last seating at 8 p.m. Menu changes weekly.

Normaltown Brewing Co. will open in its new location, on Barber Street, in the quonset hut that previously housed Jittery Joe’s Roasting Co., this Saturday, September 14, at noon, with pop-up food, music, new beers and the Georgia-Kentucky game on TV in the evening.
