Mask Mandate Rescinded as Athens COVID Rates Fall

Athens-Clarke County’s mask mandate is no longer in effect, as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention downgraded the county’s COVID-19 classification.

Based on cases per 100,000 people, as of its weekly update Thursday night the CDC says Clarke County’s community level is “medium.” The county recorded 158 cases per 100,000 people over the past seven days, down from 213 the previous week.

However, new hospitalizations rose from 12 to 17, and two residents died of COVID-19 during the past week.

The mask mandate, which went back into effect July 15, will be reinstated if Clarke County exceeds 200 cases per 100,000 people for a week, prompting the CDC to move it into the high transmission category.
