Justice for Black Lives, held on June 6 outside of City Hall, was a peaceful, socially distanced rally organized by the Athens Anti-Discrimination Movement. Though the marching portion of the event was canceled—surely a difficult decision, but a safety precaution taken to limit close contact with others during the pandemic—masked attendees respectfully spread out to fill the streets and listen to the various speakers and performers who took the stage. Activist Mokah Johnson began the rally with eight minutes and 46 seconds of silence in honor of George Floyd, and this solemn yet determined tone was carried through the duration of the event.
