The Athens Area Human Relations Council will host this year’s Martin Luther King, Jr. Awards as a virtual event. The theme is “The Urgency of Creating the Beloved Community” featuring keynote speaker Deja Watkins (2014 AAHRC Scholarship recipient and English teacher at W.R. Hornsby Middle School in Augusta, GA) and soloist Melvin Rambeau, Jr. (recording artist and 2007 AAHRC Scholarship recipient.)

The Martin Luther King, Jr. Awards Banquet is held each year to honor individuals or organizations that have made outstanding contributions to human relations through volunteer work or by addressing various social issues. The banquet also recognizes the hard work of community youth by awarding scholarships to exceptional high-school seniors. Registration required to attend. www.humanrelationscouncil.org

More than 20 different community organizations and schools will host volunteer service projects for the 19th annual Day of Service. A variety of daytime shifts are available for volunteers of all ages. Volunteers must wear face coverings and social distance at all times. While a kickoff ceremony will not be taking place,  a virtual celebration will be emailed to registrants. The Oconee Cultural Arts Foundation seeks to inspire a greater sense of community spirit by introducing their Artist of the Week event for 2021.
This event is set to be an opportunity for artists of all skill levels and of any medium to showcase their imagination and innovation. Along with their submitted work, artists will be asked to provide either a two-minute video explaining their work, an artist statement or a bio (under 300 words.) Selected artists will have their work on display in OCAF’s hall gallery, website and social media platforms. Thus, all work is required to be gallery-ready (and available for purchase.)
