A book signing with Michael Thurmond will celebrate the reissue of his A Story Untold: Black Men and Women in Athens History, originally published 41 years ago to preserve and promote the valuable contributions of local black community members. His latest book, Freedom: Georgia’s Antislavery Heritage, 1733–1865, presents a history of the struggle to abolish slavery from the early 18th Century until the end of the Civil War. Raised as a sharecropper’s son in Clarke County, Thurmond became the first local African American elected to the Georgia General Assembly since Reconstruction, and is currently DeKalb County CEO.
