Ex Hex, Spider Bags, Nihilist Cheerleader

As the leader of indie-rock underdog Helium in the mid-1990s, guitarist and songwriter Mary Timony established a cagey, subversive brand of pop that paired the alt-radio trends of the time with brainy arrangements. With her current trio, Ex Hex, Timony has gone full-on riff warrior, conjuring the beer-soaked ghosts of classic rock on 2014’s Rips and reminding festival crowds that rock and roll can still be fun as hell. The group returned March with a follow-up, It’s Real, which pushed the faders even further into the stratosphere. Tracks like “Another Dimension” find Ex Hex exploring the gaudy, glorious world of ’80s hair metal.
