Spirits Having Fun, Art Contest, Christina Schneider, Realistic Pillow

Blending accessible indie sensibilities with jagged melodies and head-spinning musicianship, Chicago four-piece Spirits Having Fun invite comparisons to avant-rock greats Deerhoof, former Athens standouts Mothers and any number of prog-minded pop forebears. The band released its debut full-length, Auto-Portrait, June 28, featuring twitchy, memorable tunes like “Gift Shopping” and “Electricity Explorer,” both of which showcase the group’s playful, polyrhythmic approach. Spirits Having Fun play Go Bar Friday with locals Locate S,1, aka of Montreal associate Christina Schneider; math-pop crew Art Contest; and experimental outfit Realistic Pillow.
