The annual auction raises awareness of water pollution and conservation efforts through beautiful and functional works of art. Several well-known local artists are offering barrels painted in their traditional styles, such as Jamie Calkin’s watercolor-esque “Herb Garden,” Lou Kregel’s signature chrysanthemum motif in “Somewhere Over the Rain Barrel” and Cameron Bliss Ferrelle’s polka-dotted “14 Cows and 1 Donkey.” Co-organized by the Stormwater Management Program and Water Conservation Office, there are a total of 16 barrels available by Lorenzo Chico Rozier, Deborah Manoll, Julia Wynn Safer, Maggie Seee and others. Proceeds benefit the Athens Green School Program, an initiative promoting environmental education.
