Blending complex rhythms of Zulu tradition with a cappella harmonies, Ladysmith Black Mambazo holds one of South Africa’s most prolific recording careers, with over 70 albums to their name since 1960. In addition to being a favorite of Lindsay Lohan’s character in Mean Girls, the ensemble is popularly remembered for joining Paul Simon on his 1986 Graceland album. The group was also asked to perform at the 1993 Nobel Peace Prize ceremony for Nelson Mandela, who called them “South Africa’s cultural ambassadors to the world.” Ethnomusicology professor Jean Ngoya Kidula will offer a pre-performance lecture in Ramsey Concert Hall at 6:45 p.m.
