Sunwatchers, Calico Vision

Wednesday’s Sunwatchers gig atop the Theatre is a homecoming for three of the New York-based band’s members: Jim McHugh, Jeff Tobias and Jason Robira, all of whom played in the short-lived but fondly remembered Athens freak-rock collective Dark Meat. The group, which also features Chris Forsyth associate Peter Kerlin on bass, has taken Dark Meat’s anarchic energy and concentrated it into a potent, politically charged jazz-punk attack. Sunwatchers followed their roaring second full-length, February’s II, with Basement Apes Vol. 1, a kinetic collection of live recordings and rare tracks, in May. They’ll be joined by local indie-rock favorite Calico Vision, which has been dropping a steady trickle of singles in what we hope is a sign of an upcoming LP.
