Mike Cooley

Though Patterson Hood has long been known as the Drive-By Truckers’ most politically engaged member, the group’s other leader, guitarist Mike Cooley, has seen his songwriting contributions increase in both number and focus over the group’s past two albums. Last year’s American Band featured several instant Cooley classics, including “Ramon Casiano”—about the 1931 murder of a Mexican teen by a future NRA leader who went unpunished for the crime—and lead single “Surrender Under Protest,” which proved to be one of 2016’s most potent political tunes. The Foundry hosts Cooley for a special solo acoustic performance Wednesday.
