Avant-garde percussionist and acoustic sound artist Tatsuya Nakatani creates intuitively improvised, experimental music using drums, gongs, cymbals, singing bowls, miscellaneous objects and handcrafted bows and mallets. The Pennsylvania-based Japanese musician has released over 80 recordings documenting his unique instrumentation and explorations into non-linear performance. In addition to teaching master classes and workshops, he leads the Nakatani Gong Orchestra, a site-specific sound art project where community ensembles are guided through compositions on bowed gongs. Nakatani will be joined by local audio/visual performer Grant Evans, who welds tape loops, homemade electronics, acoustic instruments and field recordings into noise and ambient soundscapes.
