Maximum Busy Muscle, Mother the Car, Hunger Anthem

Local math-metal group Maximum Busy Muscle’s approach has evolved as its membership has expanded, from the initial two-piece of guitarist Jason Roach and drummer Mary Joyce, to the trio with Adam Hebert on bass, to the current quartet featuring drummer Erika Rickson. The band’s self-titled debut full-length, which it celebrates with a show at Caledonia Friday, is bold and intoxicating, featuring Hella-esque guitar acrobatics and Big Business-style low-end sludge. MBM’s two drummers—on the record, they are panned to separate channels, creating a disorienting effect—round out the group’s sound with a ceaseless rhythmic assault. Blooze-rockers Mother the Car and punks Hunger Anthem share Friday’s bill.
