The galvanizing force that is the Athens Hip Hop Awards returns for its fifth annual edition to recognize hard-fought forward movement for local hip hop, as a steady stream of album releases and showcases at rock-dominated clubs have finally sparked conversation and collaboration with the wider, whiter scene. In addition to honoring voters’ favorite artists, producers, DJs, mixtapes, promoters and more, awards will be given in community-oriented categories like Restaurant of the Year and Barbershop of the Year. Founders Mokah and Knowa Johnson’s impact has been felt beyond the local-music realm, as they are among the most visible and vigorous community activists.
