Wings-Eating Contest, Valentine’s Food Options and More Food Events

Beef O’Brady’s will hold its annual wings-eating contest during the halftime of the Super Bowl, on Sunday, if you’re more interested in chicken than in Beyonce. Wings are “nuclear”-flavored, the charge is $12 (except for the first three entrants, who get to compete for free) and the winner gets free wings for a year.

Today brings the 33rd anniversary of Mama Sid’s, the venerable pizza place on the Eastside, which will offer a 33 percent discount on all purchases for the day (Friday, Feb. 5).

Tonight at 7 p.m., Cine screens For Grace, a documentary about chef Curtis Duffy, as a benefit for Seed Life Skills. The connection is that Duffy was inspired to pursue a culinary career by his middle-school home economics teacher. The National will provide hors d’oeuvres. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased online here.

On Saturday, Feb. 13, Terrapin will host a special Valentine’s Day edition of its brewery tour from 4:30–7:30 p.m. where you can taste all four versions of its new Single Origin Coffee Stout, which is brewed with Jittery Joe’s coffee, paired with local sweets.

If you want to brave the crowds on Valentine’s Day, The National is offering a three-course (plus snacks) prix fixe for $55. Kiki’s Bakeshop has cakes, cookies, cupcakes and chocolate-dipped strawberries for order by Wednesday. White Tiger is doing a five-course meal for $60 (make reservations by calling 706-202-1642). Five and Ten has a four-course dinner for $65 (plus $35 for wine pairings; call 706-546-7300).

South Kitchen + Bar is doing a craft cocktail party that aims to find the best bartender in Athens on Feb. 16 (tickets are $12 through Eventbrite) and a five-course beer dinner with Creature Comforts on Feb. 23 (tickets are $60; buy through the restaurant). Catch 22 is doing a three-course Wild Heaven beer dinner on Feb. 17 ($35; call 706-549-6333 to reserve a spot)
