Pouch Savory World of Pies to Open Downtown Soon

Flagpole has been hearing dribs and drabs of information for some time now about the savory pie shop that is taking over the former Picante’s space on Broad downtown, but we finally made contact with owner Charmaine Enslin, and she gave us the scoop.

Enslin is South African, hailing from an internationally diverse family, and when they came to the United States a few years ago, they noticed that savory pies, a grand global tradition, were in short supply.

Pouch Savory World of Pies aims to remedy that deficit, with a menu of savory pastries and pasties from South Africa, Ireland, Russia (fish pie!), Morocco (veggies) and beyond. Each pie will run $5.50, and there will be sweet stuff, too, as well as items beyond pie.

The restaurant has already passed its health inspection, so it may have a soft open before the end of 2014, with a grand opening in January. Enslin thinks there’s a real place for her pies, pointing out that they make a quick and portable meal.

She’ll have plenty of vegetarian options, as well as meaty stuff, and will keep late-night hours (until 2 a.m.) Thursday through Saturday, opening from 11 a.m.–11 p.m. Monday through Wednesday.
