Another Athens brewery, Southern Brewing Co., broke ground this morning and is scheduled to open in May 2015.
Plans for the Collins Industrial Boulevard brewery (near Athens Tech) call for a beer garden, music venue, farmers market, artist market, bike trails, yeast lab and art camp. Like Terrapin and Creature Comforts, Southern Brewing Co. will offer tastings and tours.
Co-owner Brian Roth, an experienced homebrewer, made plans to start the brewery after an internship with local distributor Leon Farmer & Co. Partner Rick Goddard was a lobbyist for the Beer Institute.
Athens-Clarke County officials said they expedited Southern Brewing Co.’s permits because it’s expected to employ 30 people. It also received a Small Business Development Center loan.
