The A.V. Club Praises Flagpole Artist Lee Gatlin’s Superhero Comics

The A.V. Club recently published a feature titled “The Best Comics of 2016 So Far,” and it’s a handy guide to some of the year’s finest work, from graphic novels to web comics. Included on the list is former Athenian Lee Gatlin, a frequent Flagpole illustrator whose excellent Gang Agley series appears in our weekly print edition and online.

Of Gatlin’s comics, which often feature iconic monsters and superheroes in, uh, less-than-heroic moments, the A.V. Club writes, “His fan comics are impressively engaging, with hilarious characterization of Peter Parker and other characters. They remind you of the power of strip comics, and show what’s missing from a lot of our heroic narratives.”

Of course, Flagpole readers and staff have known of Gatlin’s greatness (and the greatness of our other comic artists!) for a long time, but it’s always fun to see some outside recognition.

Click over to Gatlin’s Tumblr to check out more of his work.
