Calendar Pick: OLLI Film Festival

Daughters of the Dust

Sponsored by the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at UGA, Ciné’s summer series is bringing under-recognized films by women from around the world back to the silver screen. Julie Dash’s Daughter of the Dust (1991) is first in the series, an atmospheric story of three generations of Gullah women that is also the first feature film directed by an African American woman to be theatrically released. Next is First Cow (2019), a western drama by Kelly Reichardt that is set in 1820s Oregon, showing on July 16. On July 23 is Away From Her (2006), a romantic drama about a couple who has been married 44 years when the wife begins displaying symptoms of Alzheimer’s. On July 30 is Chicken with Plums (2011), co-written and directed by French-Iranian novelist and cartoonist Marjane Satrapi and following a violinist’s last week of life. Finally is LuLu Wang’s The Farewell (2019), a comedy-drama set in China that follows a final family reunion spurred on by dying matriarch Nai Nai. Check athenscine.com for showtimes.
