One Cyclist Killed, Another Injured by Alleged DUI Driver

A possibly impaired driver killed one cyclist and severely injured another on Athena Drive in northeastern Clarke County Monday evening, Tim Bryant of WGAU 1340 AM reported this morning.

Ashley Block, a 25-year-old University of Georgia PhD student from Minneapolis, has been indentified as the cyclist who was killed.

Mitchell Enfinger, another cyclist who was hit, was “critically injured,” according to Bryant, and he was taken to Athens Regional Medical Center for treatment. Friends have set up a GoFundMe page to help with Enfinger’s recovery.

A third cyclist, Roger Molloy, was treated for minor injuries, according to the Athens Banner-Herald. The ABH reported that Molloy owns The Hub Bicycle, which organized the group ride Monday evening, but the owner of The Hub’s name is listed as Brian Molloy on the store’s website.

Whitney Baker Howard, 31, was arrested and charged with homicide by vehicle, among several other charges. Police say Howard was under the influence of drugs and using her phone when she crossed the center line on Athena Drive between Spring Valley Road and Olympic Drive around 6 p.m., hitting the cyclists, and a child was in the Jeep at the time.

Criminal records list a Whitney Howard of Athens as having been arrested on DUI and shoplifting charges in recent months.

Howard was booked into the Clarke County Jail Monday night and is currently being held without bond.
