Police: Few Leads in Downtown Athens Shooting

Athens-Clarke County police have yet to arrest anyone in connection with the shooting death of an Athens resident downtown early Saturday morning, according to the Athens Banner-Herald.

Daniel Joseph Macias, 28, a Riverbend Parkway resident and Agua Linda server, was shot and killed behind the ACC Courthouse parking deck.

Police said the shooting was not recorded by downtown surveillance cameras, and they have been unable to locate any witnesses. Crime Stoppers is offered a $1,000 reward, and anyone with information can call ACCPD at 706-546-5900 or Sgt. Mark Malueg at 706-613-3888 ext. 298.

Macias’ murder was the first downtown since 2003—when an 18-year-old visitor from Tennessee was shot and killed outside a Broad Street nightclub—and the second of 2016 citywide.
