Odor Forces Evacuation of Clarke County Courthouse

The Athens-Clarke County Courthouse was evacuated this morning after someone detected an odor or irritant in the air on the downtown building’s second floor.

The ACC Fire Department was called and evacuated the building around 11 a.m. as a precaution, according to Capt. Hayden Hodges, the public information officer for the Clarke County Sheriff’s Office.

The source of the odor was never found, but it turned out to be nothing to worry about—people were let back in the building at 11:25, and the courthouse has resumed normal operations, Hodges said.
