Good news for Athenians commuting to Atlanta: Georgia Department of Transportation contractors start work Wednesday on new HOT lanes on I-85.
The lanes will run in both directions between Old Peachtree Road near Suwanee and Hamilton Mill Road near Buford. Once completed, drivers who prefer taking Highway 129 rather than 316 to 85 will be able to pay a variable fee based on congestion to avoid traffic on 85.
The $139 million project also includes repaving existing lanes. It’s scheduled to wrap up in the summer of 2018.
