Athens Power Rankings for the Week of May 16

Welcome to Athens Power Rankings. In the spirit of sports rating systems, through painstaking analysis, we rank the top movers and shakers in the Classic City each week. Who’s hot? Who’s not? Find out below.

1. Winterville

It’s seemingly always sunny in the tiny but thriving town to our east, which hosts its annual Marigold Festival this weekend to raise funds for a new community arts center. Check this week’s Flagpole for much more, including the official Marigold Festival program.

2. Jessica Smith & Naoko Uno

Uno and Flagpole‘s fearless arts editor have teamed up to resurrect the Athens Face/Off, which groups local musicians into trios and challenges them to create 10 minutes of original music in one month. Check this week’s music section for more.

3. Classic City Rollergirls

The Rollergirls took on the Atlanta Men’s Roller Derby on Saturday. They may not have been victorious, but the ladies held their own against the lads from Atlanta.

4. Jenny Woodward

Like Totally’s singer and guitarist is battling Lyme disease and several other chronic conditions that have left her unable to play music or do much else. Friends are raising funds to help. This week’s Threats & Promises will have more.

5. Athens for Everyone

The local progressive group is pushing ACC to raise part-time workers’ hourly wages.
