Police Found a Body Inside a Burned Car

Athens-Clarke County police believe a Greene County man may have been the one who killed 23-year-old Atlanta resident Darla Gibbons and burned her body inside a car last week.

Police found a burned car with a body inside at a rock quarry on Winterville Road Wednesday afternoon. They later identifed the body and the car as Gibbon’s and said the Cedar Shoals High School graduate was in Athens visiting relatives. She had been shot before the car was set on fire, according to police. The body was burned so badly that dental records were needed to identify Gibbons.

On Friday, investigators interviewed a boyfriend, Rodricus Deuntay Ward, 25, of Greensboro. They then turned him over to the Greene County Sheriff’s Office on a firearms charge.

Whoever killed Gibbons, police say it was someone she knew, not a random act.

Anyone with information should call Detective Charles Ivey at (706) 613-3330 ext. 337 or the Crime Stoppers Tip Line at (706) 613-3342.
