The Clarke County School District is posting more police at local schools in the wake of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting that left 28 people dead.
“In addition to enforcing our current safety procedures, we are also increasing school district and Athens-Clarke County police presence at our schools this week,” said CCSD spokeswoman Anisa Sullivan Jimenez. “This is to ensure diligence in our safety protocols and to increase visibility of security personnel.”
Athens isn’t alone. Schools in metro Atlanta have also tightened security, according to the AJC. In addition, the state Department of Education and Emergency Management Agency have offered to review school districts’ security plans, the Associated Press reported.
This post has been updated to correct the number of deaths.
