Two months after calling evolution, embryology and the Big Bang “lies straight from the pit of Hell” at a Hartwell Baptist church, Rep. Paul Broun (R-Athens) is trying to keep his seat on the House Science, Space and Technology Committee.
“Congressman Broun intends to return to the Science Committee providing his waiver to serve on three committees is extended,” spokeswoman Meredith Griffanti told U.S. News on Monday. “We expect to know by the end of the week.”
…According to Griffanti, Broun doesn’t expect the kerfuffle to weigh on House leaders deciding committee assignments. “No, that’s not something we’re concerned about,” she said.
Four of the most conservative Republican House members have already lost their seats on the Financial Services, Budget and Agriculture committees for voting against the leadership.
Jim Leebens-Mack—the University of Georgia plant biology professor who started a write-in campaign for Charles Darwin—is urging 10th District residents to contact Speaker John Boehner’s office and tell him to take Broun off the science committee.
Darwin received 5,499 votes with all but tiny Hancock County reporting, Leebens-Mack said. Broun received 211,065 votes running unopposed.
