The nationwide Engineering & Public Works Roadshow showcasing outstanding engineering and infrastructure is making a stop in Athens on Saturday, Apr. 19 to celebrate the Murmur Trestle and the 45th anniversary of R.E.M.’s first show at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church.
The Roadshow will host an event at 1 p.m. at 100 Dudley Park Rd. with speakers Athens-Clarke County Mayor Kelly Girtz and Bertis Downs, manager and attorney of R.E.M. The reconstruction of the Murmur Trestle and transformation of the Firefly Trail Bridge will be spotlighted, showcasing the preservation of an important cultural monument as well as the ingenuity of the Firefly Trail project.
The Engineering & Public Works Roadshow is a collaboration between the American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC), the American Public Works Association (APWA) and the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE). Since its inception in 2022, the Roadshow has traveled across the country to hold events at locations highlighted as examples of successful infrastructure projects that have improved quality of life, enhanced economic opportunity and improved resilience, as explained in a press release.
The event is open to the public, and it will be livestreamed on X at @EPWRoadshow.
